Book Review: The Hidden Plague - Tara Grant

The Hidden Plague

Although I don't have Hidradenitis Suppurativa I have suffered from chronic dermatitis and so empathise with making visits to several dermatologists and health professionals all telling me that diet has no influence on my particular skin affliction. Well of course now I know differently!

Autoimmune disorders cover a vast array of conditions - some of the most common include rheumatoid arthritis, Grave's disease, psoriasis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). With "The Hidden Plague" - Tara's honesty, suggestions, research and personal experience demonstrate how foods can trigger autoimmune disorders through leaky gut leading to systemic inflammation but most importantly provides some welcome solutions on tackling the potential root causes - I wish a guide like this was available for me when I needed it many years ago!

Here's a few reasons why I enjoyed this book:

  • What to eat, what not to eat (and most importantly - why!);

  • How to determine potential trigger foods and personalise your diet;

  • A comprehensive review on the role (and importance) of hormones when it comes to health;

  • The importance of keeping track of your condition by maintaining a health journal (with a useful appendix provided);

  • Why conventional treatments don't work and can be more painful then the condition itself!;

  • A great external resource section;

  • Useful tips to tackle any setbacks you may face;

  • a well written piece of work!
I really enjoyed reading this book, thanks Tara for this resource - highlighting the importance of food as medicine!

Book Review: Cholesterol Clarity

Jimmy Moore cuts to the chase with an excellent reference - whether you are a lay person or knowledgable about the subject.

In summary:

Why saturated fat has been demonised and why that hypothesis was flawed right from the start?
What aspects of blood work are indicators of good & poor health and why?
What the cholesterol numbers actually mean?
Discussion and opinion from leading experts in their field.
Why statins are not the silver-bullet we are told to put our faith in.
The relevance of inflammation rather than total cholesterol as a determinant of health concerns in relation to heart health.

I would highly recommend this book, it is pitched just about right for anyone who has the pleasure to read it and who wants to make a more informed decision in relation to saturated fat/cholesterol and their health.

Paleo Fitness Book Review - "Fit for Parenthood"

Paleo Fitness Book Review - "Fit for Parenthood"

"A mother doesn’t have to be fit to sit in the rocking chair and nurse her baby. She doesn’t have to be fit to change a diaper and sing at Music Together Class. She doesn’t have to be fit to play this little piggy and read bedtime stories, to keep a toxin-free home and prepare food from scratch. She doesn’t have to be fit to love and be loved.

But there are things she can’t do if she isn’t fit!"
